How to Choose a TTR Ribbon for Your Label Printer

The right TTR ribbon means sharp print, fewer changes and no production stops. Check four things.

1. Ribbon width

Ribbon size is given as width in mm × length in m, e.g. 110 × 450. Measure the width of the label liner. The ribbon must be at least as wide – leave a small margin. For a 73 mm label the liner is usually 76 mm, so choose an 80 mm ribbon.

2. Length

The ribbon unwinds together with the label, including the gap. For a 100 × 150 mm shipping label (153 mm with gap) a 300 m ribbon prints about 2,000 labels, a 450 m ribbon about 2,900 labels. Choose the longest your printer takes – fewer changes, less waste.

3. Winding IN or OUT

The ink is on the inside (IN) or outside (OUT) of the ribbon. Most desktop printers use OUT – check your manual or the old ribbon.

4. Ribbon type by label material
